Forrest Gump, an American film produced in 1994 that followed the life of an intellectually challenged man (Tom Hanks) for 30 years (from the 1950s to the early 1980s) in an unexpected fable that received critical acclaim, massive audiences, and six Academy Awards, including best picture.

The story is told through flashbacks. Forrest (played by Michael Conner Humphreys) grew up in Greenbow, Alabama, with his single mother (Sally Field). His mother has trained him to believe that he is no different than everybody else, despite his IQ of 75 and the fact that he wears braces on his legs. Jenny (Hanna Hall), a small girl on Gump's first day on the school bus, is the only child who will let him sit close to her. When his braces fall off when he is being followed by bullies, he realizes that he can run quickly.
 This talent lands him a spot on the football squad in high school and a football scholarship to the University of Alabama. He grows up to be a straightforward and straightforward man.

He develops friendships with fellow recruit Bubba Blue (Mykelti Williamson), who persuades Gump to join him on a shrimp boat when they are released from the service, and his commanding officer, Lieutenant Dan (Gary Sinise). Bubba, on the other hand, is slain, and Lieutenant Dan is saved by Gump in a battle in which Dan loses his legs and Gump is injured. The Medal of Honor is presented to Gump.
He learns to play table tennis well enough to defeat Chinese table tennis champions and become famous for his abilities while recuperating. Gump finds himself at an antiwar demonstration after his discharge, where he meets a bitter and drunken Lieutenant Dan, as well as his lover Jenny (Robin Wright), who lives a hippie lifestyle. Gump eventually returns to Alabama and purchases a shrimp boat. Lieutenant Dan joins him in establishing the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., which has become a huge success.
Lieutenant Dan invests the proceeds in Apple Computer, and the two men prosper. Following Jenny's rejection of his marriage proposal, Gump spends the next three and a half years hopping across the country before coming home. Gump is then introduced to their son by Jenny (Haley Joel Osment). Jenny dies of what appears to be hepatitis C shortly after Gump marries her. Throughout the film, Gump is involved in a number of significant events in American history that take place at that time.


Forrest Gump was based on Winston Groom's 1986 novel of the same name. Director Robert Zemeckis used computer-generated effects to place Forrest in historical events, such as encounters with presidents and celebrities, as well as a "best hits" soundtrack to convey a feeling of time and location. Many spectators praised the film for its warm, comedic tone, while others criticized it for being cliché-ridden.
For his depiction of Forrest Gump, Hanks earned a rare second best-actor Oscar in a row. Osment made his film debut in this film, and Sinise, who had previously been known for his stage performances, became a cinematic star. Sinise formed the Lt. Dan Band in 2003, a cover band that performed at USO events and veterans' charities. The Shrimp Company of Bubba Gump The casual seafood restaurant business was formed in 1996 and is named after the film's fictional shrimping operation.
